Mr. L\u00e9on D\u00e9soyer,entrepreneur, patron and mayor of Saint-Germain-en-Laye in the early 20th century, and his wife Eug\u00e9nie, benefactor of the town, welcome you to their home bequeathed to the town in 1929. Their busts are above the interactive table. Opposite them, the two works of art come from the council collections and represent Ranavalona IIl, the last queen of Madagascar, and the Antiquaire du Pont des Arts,by Honor\u00e9 Icard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Villa Eug\u00e9nie-D\u00e9soyer is home to the Saint Germain Boucles de Seine Intermunicipal Tourist Office and Caf\u00e9 des Arts on the ground floor. On the first floor, the Royal Apothecary has a remarkable collection of objects from the old hospitals of the town. It can be seen during the opening hours of the building: take the stairs or lift to the 1st floor and press the switch to the right of the glass door. On the left, after the door, a second small glass room houses ancient objects for the preparation of remedies. Visit 1 Saturday per month, only by reservation.The apothecary is always visible from the outside during building opening hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.Rue du Vieil Abreuvoir<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the street entrance there was a large watering pond but it was demolished in the 18th century to make way for the \u00ab\u00a0coche\u00a0\u00bb, the public vehicle that was the ancestor of the \u201cdiligence\u00a0\u00bbstagecoach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"758\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/saint-germain.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Rues-758x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saint-germain.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Rues-758x1024.jpg 758w, https:\/\/saint-germain.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Rues-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/saint-germain.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Rues-768x1037.jpg 768w, https:\/\/saint-germain.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Rues-1138x1536.jpg 1138w, https:\/\/saint-germain.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Rues-scaled.jpg 1896w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 758px) 100vw, 758px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Les rues de Saint-Germain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>3.Rue des Coches<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(stagecoaches) travelling to neighbouring towns, including Paris and Versailles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No.17:H\u00f4tel de Guise:this private mansion was owned by Henri II de Lorraine, Duc de Guise and grandson of the \u201cBalafr\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb (\u201cslashed face\u00a0\u00bb). Albert Alain, the famous organist from Saint-Germain-en-Laye, was also born here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the left, the \u00abrue des Vieilles Boucheries\u00bb was, as the name suggests, where the meat market took place. A little further on, we find the \u00abrue \u00e0 la Farine\u00bb, which was where the Grain and Flour Hall was created by Francois I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.Rue au Pain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So called since 1667, it has been long considered as the main street in the town. It takes its name from the bakers who set out their stalls there on market days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No. 38: the birthplace of the composer Claude Debussy, who was born there on 22 August 1862.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5.Rue de la Salle<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus named since 1640 in honour of the captains who governed the town, but also because it housed a hall (\u00ab\u00a0salle\u00a0\u00bb) where the residents would meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No. 14:One of the oldest houses in the town. Half-timbered, it is typical of the late Middle Ages. The facade has been restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No. 18: H\u00f4tel des Mar\u00e9chaux de Villeroy. Owned by Nicolas de Neuville, governor under Louis XIV, and later by his son Fran\u00e7ois, who was also a governor but under Louis XV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Place Charles de Gaulle You are standing opposite:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Old-Castle : Saint-Germain-en-Laye was the residence of numerous kings of France, including Saint Louis, Francois I and, of course, Louis XIV. Each left their mark and the castle&rsquo;s architecture has evolved greatly over the centuries. Now the National Archaeology Museum, the Old-Castle is home to an exceptional collection of archaeological objects from France and the four corners of the world. Near the castle you can see the gardens of the National Domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7Saint-Germain church, with its neo-classical stye, was consecrated in 1827.
